Case Study: Paid Video Streaming Call User Flow Mobile App UX UI design
Paid Video Call App UX/UI Case Study
Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
Project Overview
WiseLlama hired me to lead the UX/UI design for a mobile-first app that allows fans to pay for one-on-one video calls with their favorite creators. The experience had to be sleek, simple, and secure while balancing two competing needs:
Smooth user experience for fans
Safety and control for creators
The core design challenge was creating a frictionless yet safe video-calling experience. I designed the entire app: onboarding, user profiles, settings, booking flow, payment, call interface, and post-call reviews.
Inbox Chat Interface
Problem
While the concept of paid video chats between fans and creators is appealing, it introduces a unique risk: prank calls, including inappropriate video behavior. For creators, even a single incident could lead to negative experiences, churn, and reputational risk.
The business needed a UX/UI mechanism that reduced prank call risk without making the user experience cumbersome or awkward.
Target Audience
Callers: fans or users willing to pay to talk to creators (often spontaneous, younger demographic)
Receivers: content creators and influencers monetizing their time
Research & Early Concepts
We interviewed both creators and fans:
Fans were generally open to being previewed if clearly informed.
Creators strongly preferred a preview option—but didn’t want to manually approve each caller.
Key Insight: Even a 5% prank rate is unacceptable for creators, but manual approval added too much friction.
We prototyped several flows:
Manual approval by creators
Tap-to-continue buttons during preview
Delayed auto-start
None felt seamless until we found a middle ground.
Onboarding
Final UX/UI Solution: 5-Second Video Preview
The final design solution involved a subtle, clever flow:
When a fan initiates the call, their camera is immediately on, and a clear notice appears: "You are being previewed."
The creator sees a 5-second live preview of the fan before the call connects.
After 5 seconds, the call auto-starts, unless the creator exits.
This design strikes the right balance:
No extra steps for fans
Transparent expectations
Lightweight safety for creators
Video streaming setup and call end
Other UX Challenges Solved
Calls List & Earnings Presentation
Creators needed a clear overview of upcoming and past calls, with projected earnings.
I designed a calls list screen with status indicators (upcoming, missed, completed) and projected revenue from each booking.
Each list item expands to show more details (user profile, amount paid, duration).
Call List
Secure Payment & Privacy
Implemented a secure booking flow with pre-payment using Stripe.
Added clear privacy notices for both sides before calls.
Creators could set their availability and pricing, reducing friction while maintaining control.
Full System Ownership
I designed:
Onboarding flow with light brand tone and motion
Profile setup and edit views
Booking UI: pick a time slot, preview profile, pay
Fun and minimal visual identity suitable for Gen Z users
Large avatars, gradient accents, and tap-friendly UI
Real-time feedback animations to guide users through scheduling, payments, and live calls
Outcomes & Reflections
The solution was tested with creators and target users in Figma prototype form.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Creators reported feeling safer and fans didn’t find the preview intrusive.
While full usage results depend on live deployment, the tested flow gave strong signals for real-world success. I also provided a UX follow-up plan to iterate after launch based on real call behavior analytics.
