AR Navigation & Coupon Discovery App

Year: 2017
Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
Client: Ryan Baxter (UK-based entrepreneur)

This iOS application combined augmented reality (AR), geolocation, and gamified search to help users discover coupon offers around them using real-world navigation. It showcased interactive maps, walking directions, and on-site rewards through AR experiences - aligning closely with emerging use cases in Maps and AR/VR.

Search The star on map

Key Highlights:

  • Map-based User Experience: Designed a map interface and location services logic that guided users in real-time to nearby "coupon stars" using both 2D maps and AR overlays.
  • AR Navigation: Delivered intuitive AR guidance via animated arrows and markers overlaid on camera view, enhancing spatial awareness and discovery.
  • Gamification & Interaction Design: Introduced a reward system for visiting real-world locations, integrating motivational UX patterns to drive engagement.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Worked with an engineering partner and client to balance design ambition with mobile device constraints and sensor limitations.
  • Full Flow Design: Defined and prototyped all flows—from discovery and onboarding to map navigation and coupon redemption.

Core Features & Flows Designed:

  • View a list or map of coupon "stars" nearby
  • Tap to navigate via AR + traditional walking map
  • Receive push notifications when near a coupon location
  • Save found coupons to a wallet
  • Explore local attractions in VR mode (360° videos)
  • Onboarding screens introducing AR navigation and gamified features
  • Visual design of ~50 unique screens, focused on clarity and playfulness

Tools: Sketch (design), InVision (prototyping), user testing feedback loops

This project demonstrated my ability to design map-based and AR-powered mobile experiences from scratch, with a focus on usability, flow logic, and engaging UI—making it directly relevant to roles focused on Maps and AR/VR products.
